If a person underwent teletransportation—a process in which the person is disintegrated, and a perfect duplicate of them is created elsewhere—would the person survive? In this talk, I approach the issue by arguing for a “Cosmic-Thinker” metaphysic on which it isn’t persons or their parts that are conscious, but rather the cosmos that is conscious. I argue that, on this Cosmic-Thinker view, there’s no deep metaphysical question about the identity of persons over time. Furthermore, the deep metaphysical fact that we do care about in survival—i.e. the continuation of one’s own consciousness—is in fact preserved in teletransportation. I further apply this to the issue of an afterlife.
